Permanent seating, stage underway for MSU Summer Circle Theatre

Theatergoers will have a new space to enjoy the beloved Summer Circle Theatre at Michigan State University come June thanks to upcoming renovations to the performance area.

"For decades, we've been providing free theater to the community," says Kirk Domer, chair of the MSU Department of Theatre. "This new permanent space will allow us to focus on the art instead of putting up bleachers, stage and scaffolding each year."

The $750,000 improvements include construction of a stage and raised seating area in the campus courtyard between Kresge Art Center and the Auditorium. Other enhancements include upgrades for audio and electrical capabilities, an accessible walkway for patrons, and landscaping.

The new outdoor theater venue, Domer says, will provide a much-needed permanent space for student actors, designers and technicians to present their creative work. The raised seating accommodates up to 400 people, while additional spectators can sit on a new rubberized ground surface.

In addition to hosting the Summer Circle Theatre, the permanent performance area on the banks of the Red Cedar River will be available for other community events including music, art or special gatherings.

"One thing that's very important to note is that we will still have the ice cream truck at Summer Circle performances," laughs Domer. "One of our donors had to make sure it was there before making their commitment."

The Summer Circle Theatre celebrates its 54th season this June. Courtyard renovations are being funded by a gift from long-time theater supporters Sam and Mary Austin, as well as through an ongoing campaign by the Friends of Theatre.
